TITANIC CLASSICS - Parlour Favourites of 1912

TITANIC CLASSICS - Parlour Favourites of 1912
CD / Product Number: URCD245

It would be hard to find anyone in the western world who was not aware of the story of the ill-fated ocean liner Titanic. Countless books and films have been made over the years since she sank during her maiden voyage on 15th April 1912 after hitting an iceberg. The hull was rediscovered on the seabed in 1985 and numerous artefacts have been recovered from the wreck and put on display at museums all over the world. In this, the centenary year of the disaster, a new 3D version of the 1997 feature film and two TV drama series are being launched to mark the anniversary. This CD is a musical snapshot of the light classical music that could well have been played on Titanic to amuse the society passengers in the many restaurants and salons on board ship during the voyage. This was an era when people made their own entertainment, and parlour classics were performed in households up and down the country by enthusiastic and often very gifted amateurs. This selection of songs, guitar favourites and popular piano pieces would have been very familiar to passengers. Vocal duets were particularly popular, with composers making special arrangements for the different combinations of voices. The piano was a great favourite, and homes which boasted one were always full of music and laughter. The guitar was now emerging as an instrument in parlour circles, and was just coming into its own in contemporary music and jazz. So sit back and enjoy these timeless tunes and imagine yourself for a moment in the glorious surroundings of the many lounges and salons on board ship where the music would have echoed around the wooden panelling in a long gone age of grace and melody. All the musical selections on this disc have proved their enduring popularity. Indeed you will find Nellie Melba singing 'O Lovely Night' on YouTube today, which proves that they are truly titanic classics!
