The John R T Davies Collection Volume 1 Jazz Classics - 4 CD Set
The late John R T Davies was an accomplished musician who moved into the arena of remastering because nobody at the time seemed to be doing it adequately. Just as important as his expertise as an engineer and musician was the fact that he was a jazz fanatic. Soon he became one of the leaders in the field - sought after because he was able to coax long lost sounds from old, often worn, record grooves - and could remove (or at least minimise) the accumulated hiss and crackle of decades of playing. Some of his best work was done for JSP. The compilation of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings (JSPLOUISBOX100) which he painstakingly remastered over a decade ago is still much admired - it's arguably his masterpiece. JSP are now releasing more of his best work as the most fitting testament to a man who was a great friend to jazz fans everywhere. This volume concentrates on recordings, the majority of them rare, by four great characters and bandleaders of American jazz: trumpeter/singer Louis Prima, clarinetist Ted Lewis, violinist Joe Venuti and drummer George Wettling.
