Reed Renaissance - As Time Goes By - George Probert and Bob Helm
The name Reed Renaissance was coined by Big Bill's wife Sarah who said - Probert is the Michaelangelo of reed players while Helm is Leonardo! Like Michaelangelo, Probert is energetic, unorthodox, spontaneous and brilliant, while Helm, like Leonardo was meditatice, logical, calm and a genius. The resulting CD cuts a wide swath of repertoire, and the quartet keeps the music uncluttered and fresh. These must be the youngest 'old timers' on the planet!
For this session, which was recorded in California in June 1996, George Probert - soprano sax, clarinet, baritone sax, alto sax - and Bob Helm - clarinet, soprano sax and alto sax - were joined by Brad Roth on banjo and guitar and June Barnes on string bass.
