Rare Cuts - Well Done Vol. 9 - Franz Jackson At The Village Gate and Paul Barbarin's Onward Brass Band
CD / Product Number: JCCD3112

Franz Jackson has had a notable and diverse career having served stints in the bands of Jimmie Noone, Fletcher Henderson, Roy Eldridge, Albert Ammons, Earl Hines, Fats Waller and Cootie Williams! He leaned to the commercial and was very active in Chicago. This was a show band par excellence! The CD was recorded at The Village Gate New York City in December 1968 and personnel were Franz Jackson reeds, Leon Scott trumpet, Preston Jackson trombone, Lil Hardin-Armstrong piano, Ikey Robinson banjo, Bill Oldham tuba, Tommy Benford drums,Jeanne Carroll vocals.
Paul Barbarin's Onward Brass Band filled a very similiar function in New Orleans, designed to play for jazz clubs and civic organisations. They featured a banjo and many vocals and rarely played for funerals! These sides were recorded at the Holiday Inn in Meriden Connecticut in July 1968. Here the personnel are Paul Barbarin bass drum/leader, Alvin Alcorn, Ernie Cagnolatti trumpet, Wendell Eugene, Clement Tervalon trombone, Louis Cotrell clarinet, Danny Barker banjo and vocals, Freddie Kohlman snare drum, Jerry Green sousaphone.
