Despite a reputation for having a hedonistic lifestyle and for being somewhat chaotic on stage Mick Mulligan’s band and its singer, George Melly, made some very good records. This release is based around an LP made in 1957 and was the first one made under George Melly’s name. It is something of a concept album on a Blues theme and features the band with guests, much of it recorded ‘live’. The additional tracks come from a series of singles from the same era. The bonus second disc is a complete set of the band’s earliest recordings under the name of Mick Mulligan’s Magnolia Jazz Band from their first in 1950 to two singles made under George’s name in 1952. Rex Harris and Brian Rust noted in their book ‘Recorded Jazz – A Critical Guide’ (Pelican) '…there is something very appealing about the virile earthy sound produced by the 1950 band.'
