Duke Ellington - Volume 2 The Cotton Club To Sweden - 4 CD Set
The first JSP Duke Ellington volume traced Duke's recording career from 1926 until January 1929. During that period the sound and style of the music which would become identified as Ellingtonian took shape. This second collection spans March 1929 to February 1940, an important period for jazz in general and Ellington in particular. It concentrate on the orchestra's performances, mainly instrumental, along with a handful of those featuring singer Ivie Anderson, and a few other vocal items. The period covered includes the orchestra's first residency at the original Cotton Club (Harlem), original contributions to a Ziegfeld revue (in NYC) and to movies (in Hollywood), a British tour in 1933 (with recordings for UK Decca), headlining at the newly relocated Cotton Club in Manhattan in 1936 and the 1938 recruiting of composer/arranger Billy Strayhorn. Just six months prior to the Second World War, the orchestra visited France, then Sweden, where Duke celebrated his 40th birthday with a broadcast. A busy period, then, authoritatively reflected by this 100 track set, compiled and annotated by Sally-Ann Worsfold.
