The first volume in a series of rare recordings from this popular American label. The personnel for the first 2 tracks are The George Lewis Ragtime Band recorded in 1952. George Lewis' clarinet is joined by Percy Humphrey trumpet, Big Jim Robinson trombone, Alton Purnell piano, Lawrence Marrero banjo, Alcide 'Slow Drag' Pavageau string bass, Joe Watkins drums.
The second set covers tracks 3-7 and features Bunk Johnson trumpet with Sister Ernestine Washington vocals. Recorded in 1946 the band includes George Lewis clarinet, Big Jim Robinson trombone, Alton Purnell piano, Lawrence Marrero banjo, Alcide Pavageau string bass, Warren Baby Dodds drums.
The third set covers tracks 8-13 and features Richard M. Jones Jazz Wizards from 1944. Richard's piano is joined by Bob Schoffner trumpet, Darnell Howard clarinet, Preston Jackson trombone, John Lindsay string bass, Warren Baby Dodds drums.
The fourth and final set - tracks 14-19 - is from 1967 and features DeDe Pierce trumpet and Billie Pierce piano and vocals in Copenhagen. The band also features Willie Humphrey clarinet, Louis Nelson trombone, Chester Zardis string bass, Cie Frazier drums.
