Pete Fountain was born in the Creole area of New Orleans and took up the clarinet on doctor's orders as a remedy for weak lung function. As his playing improved so did his lungs, and this unorthodox treatment set him on a path to musical glory! Fountain founded The Basin Street Six in 1950 and when the band broke up in 1954 he joined The Lawrence Welk Orchestra and became famous for his solos on nation TV with the Orchestra. He opened a ran several clubs in New Orleans, latterly at 800 Bourbon Street in 1960.
Fountain's clarinet work is noted for his sweet fluid tone. He has recorded over 100 LPs and CDs under his own name, some in the Dixieland style, many others with only peripheral relevance to any type of jazz.
